2003-2005 : Early Hardstyle
The first Hardstyle track dates back to 2001 (but the term « Hardstyle » didn’t exist yet). It is « I’m your DJ » of Zenith vs Avex. We can find the lyrics « Techno Sound » on it. It shows that the boundaries between styles were closed back in 2001.
Early Hardstyle is a blend of 2 popular genres in the Netherlands and in Germany : Gabber (in decline since 1998 with a tempo slower than in the past) and Hardtrance, very popular at this moment. Early Hardstyle became famous in 2003 particularly with the first edition of this legendary event in the Gelredome in Arnhem.
Early Hardstyle is distingished by a 140 BPM tempo, by reverse bass and by a kick louder than other styles of the moment. The atmosphere is dark and the music repetitive. The Prophet, Zany, Lady Dana, Isaac, Pavo, Luna and Deepack are the ambassadors of Early Hardstyle.

2006-2007 : The end of early hardstyle and the emergence of nu style
From the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006, early hardstyle went round in circles. That’s why some artists produced a new kind of Hardstyle. We can name Headhunterz – The Sacrifice, Donkey Rollers (always avant-gardists) – Immeasurably or Showtek – The Colors Of The Harder Styles. Reverse bass gave up their place to pitched kicks. Melodies are more complexes and the atmospheres are more festive than dark.
In the meantime, Hardstyle music grew up in the Netherlands and in Belgium thanks to Q-Dance events like Qlimax, Defqon.1 or In Qontrol (RIP). The Hardstyle movement started to export in Europe (Italy, France…), especially thanks to the Tecktonik trend (who remember the compilations of DJ Dess ?!).
Some Hardstyle legends like Showtek, Headhunterz or D-Block & S-te-Fan started their career during this period.

2008 : The surge of nu style
Following on 2007, early hardstyle disappeared in favor of nu style. Frontliner, Technoboy or Showtek are the new leaders of the Hardstyle scene, even if the last 2 were here during the early hardstyle era. Headhunterz and Wilstylez collaborated on the Project One, which is considered like the best album of the history of Hardstyle.

2009 : The nu style zenith
D-Block & S-te-Fan, Noisecontrollers and Headhunterz were the masters of Hardstyle in 2009. The legendary album of D-Block & S-te-Fan, Music Made Addict is a huge success and export outside the Netherlands ! The EP’s of Noisecontrollers and Heahunterz are also highly successful.
Australian Hardstyle is born thanks to Bioweapon (now Audiofreq and Code Black) and Toneshifterz.
Looking back, a lot of Hardstyle fans considered year 2009 like the best period in the history of Hardstyle.

2010 : The end of nu style
2010 was a great year for DJ Brennan Heart who had the privilege to produce a legendary anthem for Qlimax 2010 called Alternate Reality. Coone (former leader of the jumpstyle scene), Zatox (who worked in the shadows for a few years) and the Psyko Punkz, a new explosive duo, were revelations of the year.
The Nustyle is still the leading trend in Hardstyle music. But some artists like B-Front, Slim Shore, Noisecontrollers or Crypsis produce a rougher sound which begin to be more and more popular. The term “rawstyle” appeared for the first time in this famous track of Zatox (which doesn’t sound like nowadays rawstyle at all^^).
Some artists like Headhunterz experiment new sounds especially dubstep. Some “dubstyle” tracks like the MF Point of Perfection by Brennan Heart and Headhunterz are produced.

2011 : Hardstyle united in the diversity
2011 is a very important year in the history of Hardstyle music. The term “nustyle” is obsolete. Now, we speak about euphoric hardstyle with the eclosion of talents like Wasted Penguinz or Profite (now Rebourne).
In the dark side of Hardstyle, the raw movement starts to explode especially with the set of Gunz For Hire (Ran-D + Adaro) live at Qlimax. Some artists like Chris One or The R3bels produce a hardstyle sound rawer than ever !
Last but not least, Showtek leave the hardstyle scene to produce Electro.

2012 : Hardstyle at the height of its fame !
Hardstyle starts to be a major electronic music genre. Headhunterz is very closed to enter the top10 in the top100 DJ Mag (#11). There are now 12 artists in the top 100 ! Some radio stations play popular Hardstyle sounds like Lose My Mind by Brennan Heart & Wildstylez or Year Of Summer by Wildstylez whose clip is also played in French TV ! The Hard With Style podcast gets more and more audience and Q-Dance dedicates an event to Headhunterz and his concept in the Ziggo Dome, a new ultramodern concert hall in Amsterdam. Headhunterz comes up with some Electro artists by some remixes like Spaceman by Hardwell, Lessons in Love by Kaskade or Toulouse by Nicky Romero (who made an appearance at the Hard With Style show in the Ziggo Dome). Last but not least, E=NC², the new album of Noisecontrollers, is a huge success !
Nevertheless, the Hardstyle scene starts to divide. Some big hardstyle artists have a sound more an more inspired by Electro-House. Euphoric hardstyle gains ground with the emergence of young stars like Atmozfears, Omegatypez or Adrenalize (15 years old back in 2012 :P). The raw sound progresses slowly but surely particularly thanks to B-Front and Adaro who played at Qlimax !

2013 : Hardstyle flies everywhere !
Like Showtek in 2011, Headhunterz is about to jump on the big room house bandwagon. Meanwhile, Hardstyle music is more diversified than ever ! From the dubstep influences of Noisecontrollers to the brutal sound of Radical Redemption without forgetting the melodies of Bass Modulators, there is something for every Hardstyle lover !
The Hard Bass edition is rawer than ever and some melodies are replaced by anticlimaxes more and more aggressive.
It’s hard to know what will be the future of the Hardstyle scene at this time. With Showtek and Headhunterz in the Electro scene, Wildstylez, Brennan Heart, Coone, Noisecontrollers, Frontliner and Zatox are the new ambassadors of Hardstyle. D-Block & S-te-Fan are less and less booked and we have more and more doubts about their dedication to Hardstyle music.

2014 : The explosion of raw
2014 is the year of raw ! It is now a style in itself and some events like Qapital, Supremacy or Penoze are fully dedicated to this subgenre.
In the same time, Brennan Heart, Noisecontrollers or Da Tweekaz, who have exploded in 2014, turns out to be the new ambassadors of Hardstyle. But this kind of hardstyle is more moribund than the last 2 years and a lot of hardstyle fans join the raw movement supported by labels like A² Records, Unite Records or DWX Anarchy.
Euphoric hardstyle is in good health with a lot of new producers like Audiotricz, Neilio or Envine.
Some alternative genres appear like the Hard Drop which is a blend of Electro and Hardstyle thanks to artists like TNT or Dr Rude. There is also the emergence of freestyle thanks to the Pussy Lounge concepts and some artists like LNY TNZ who blend jumpstyle, trap, big room house, hardstyle, raw in their sets. This movement can be a good way to introduce Hardstyle to people who are not familiar with true Hardstyle sound.

2003-2005 : Early Hardstyle
C’est en 2001 qu’apparaît la première track Hardstyle (sans que ce terme n’existe à l’époque). Il s’agit d’ « I’m your DJ » de Zenith vs. Avex. La meilleure preuve de cela est que cette track mentionne simplement l’expression « Techno Sound ».
Le Early Hardstyle est un mélange d’influences de deux genres très populaires aux Pays-Bas et en Allemagne notamment, à savoir le Gabber (en déclin depuis 1998 et marqué par un tempo bien plus lent que quelques années auparavant), et la Hardtrance, en pleine forme elle. Mais c’est réellement en 2003 que le Early Hardstyle devient un genre reconnu, avec des events majoritairement marqués par ces sonorités, à l’image de la mythique édition de Qlimax qui s’est tenue au GelreDome d’Arnhem le 22 Novembre 2003.
L’Early Hardstyle, autour de 140 bpm, est relativement répétitif et dark, avec des « reverse basses » qui font écho à un kick plus lourd que la majorité des autres styles électroniques de cette période. 2006-2007 : La fin du early hardstyle et l’émergence du nu style
A partir de fin 2005 / début 2006, le early hardstyle commence à s’essouffler et des titres comme Immeasurably des Donkey Rollers (toujours en avance sur leur temps), Sacrifice d’Headhunterz ou encore The Colors Of The Harder Styles de Showtek proposent un hardstyle différent. Les reverse bass sont progressivement abandonnées au profit de kicks pitchés se calquant sur des mélodies de plus en plus travaillées et des ambiances moins sombres et plus festives.
Parallèlement, le hardstyle se développe de plus en plus aux Pays-Bas et en Belgique, notamment grâce aux events Q Dance : Qlimax, Defqon 1 ou encore In Qontrol. Le mouvement commence à s’exporter hors de ces frontières, notamment grâce au courant Tecktonik qui enfle dans toute l’Europe, et notamment en France et en Italie.
Des légendes du style telles qu’Headhunterz, D-Block & S-te-Fan ou Noisecontrollers commencent à faire parler d’elles.

2008 : La montée en puissance du nu style
Dans la continuité de 2007, le early hardstyle semble avoir laissé la place à ce qu’on appelle le nu style. Frontliner, Technoboy ou encore Showtek apparaissent comme de nouveaux leaders de la scène hardstyle, même si ces 2 derniers étaient déjà là pendant la période early. Mais on retiendra surtout l’album d’Headhunterz et Wildstylez, Project One, considéré comme un des meilleurs albums hardstyle de l’histoire.

2009 : Le nu style à son apogée
D-Block & S-te-Fan, Noisecontrollers et Headhunterz ont particulièrement marqué cette période qu’on peut considérer comme le paroxysme du nu style. L’album culte de D-Block & S-te-Fan, Music Made Addict, fait un carton et s’exporte même en-dehors des Pays-Bas. Les différents EP des Noisecontrollers et d’Headhunterz rencontrent également un grand succès.
On a aussi(e) assisté à la naissance du Hardstyle australien avec Bioweapon et Toneshifterz.
Avec le recul, de nombreux amateurs du Hardstyle citent 2009 comme la meilleure année du genre.

2010 : La fin du nu style
2010 aura sans nul doute été l’année de Brennan Heart qui a eu entre autres le privilège de composer l’anthem de Qlimax 2010. On aura également assisté à une belle montée d’artistes comme Coone, ancien leader de la scène Jumpstyle belge, Zatox (qui est là depuis plusieurs années mais dont on parle enfin) ou encore les deux compères néerlandais de Psyko Punkz, qui sont la révélation de l’année sur la scène Hardstyle.
Niveau sonore, on est toujours majoritairement dans du nu style mais un son plus dur, incarné par B-Front, Slim Shore, Noisecontrollers ou encore Crypsis commence à se populariser. Le terme rawstyle commence d’ailleurs à se populariser avec le titre Rawstyle de Zatox (qui n’a plus grand chose d’une plaque rawstyle comme on le conçoit aujourd’hui^^).
Certains artistes comme Headhunterz commencent également à expérimenter de nouvelles sonorités notamment dubstep. C’est ce qu’on a appelé le dubstyle, incarné par des plaques comme The Mf Point Of Perfection de Brennan Heart et Headhunterz.

2011 est également une année qui a compté dans l’histoire du hardstyle. Le terme nu-style ne parle plus à grand monde et on parle plutôt de hardstyle euphorique avec l’éclosion de talents comme les Wasted Penguinz ou Profite (aujourd’hui Rebourne).
Du côté obscur de la force, le mouvement Raw commence à exploser, notamment grâce au liveact Gunz For Hire incarné par Ran-D et Adaro, sans oublier B-Front, Chris One ou encore The R3Bels.
2011 marquera aussi le changement de direction musicale de Showtek vers l’Electro, avant que ce genre de sonorités ne soit connu sous le nom de Big Room House.

Certaines stations de radio néerlandaises diffusent les titres Hardstyle les plus populaires, le podcast « Hard With Style » d’Headhunterz devient incontournable jusqu’à ce qu’un event lui soit même consacré au ZiggoDome, l’une des salles les plus récentes des Pays-Bas. Enfin, certains morceaux Electro et House sont remixés par Headhunterz. Citons « Spaceman » d’Hardwell ou encore « Lessons in Love » de Kaskade. Le titre « Lose My Mind » produit par Brennan Heart et Wildstylez devient un hit tout comme Year Of Summer de Wildstylez dont le clip a même été diffusé en France ! Enfin, l’album E=NC² de Noisecontrollers rencontre un grand succès.
Cependant, 2012 voit le Hardstyle commencer à s’éparpiller. Alors que ses stars se dirigent doucement vers des sonorités plus House ou Electro, le Hardstyle euphorique gagne du terrain grâce à de jeunes talents tels qu’Atmozfears, Omegatypez ou encore Adrenalize, tout juste 15 ans à cette époque. Le Raw, lui, progresse nettement sous l’impulsion de Frequencerz, mais surtout grâce à ses têtes d’affiche B-Front et Adaro, qui jouent lors de l’édition annuelle de Qlimax aux Pays-Bas.

2013 : Ça part dans tous les sens !
Headhunterz suit le même chemin que Showtek et se dirige progressivement vers la Big Room House. Pendant ce temps-là, le son Hardstyle est plus diversifié que jamais. Des infuences dubstep et electro de Noisecontrollers ou Wildstylez aux sons brutaux de Radical Redemption tout en passant par les mélodies de Bass Modulators, tout le monde (ou presque) y trouve son compte.
L’édition 2013 de la Hardbass met en évidence l’émergence du RAW et voit les mélodies parfois remplacées par des anti-climaxes toujours plus agressifs.
Il est difficile de deviner quel est le futur de la scène Hardstyle à cette période, une scène qui avec les départs de Showtek et Headhunterz, se retrouve avec Wildstylez, Brennan Heart, Coone, Noisecontrollers, Frontliner et Zatox comme têtes d’affiches. Quant à D-Block & S-te-fan, le doute est permis aussi et l’on se demande s’ils vont rester sur la scène Hardstyle bien longtemps encore.

2014 : L’explosion du raw
L’année 2014 aura surtout vu l’avènement du Raw. Il est dorénavant considéré comme un style à part entière et des events dédiés au Raw se multiplient comme Qapital, Supremacy ou encore Penoze.
Mais à côté de cela, Brennan Heart, Noisecontrollers ou encore Da Tweekaz, qui ont explosé cette année, ont continué à porter les couleurs du Hardstyle « mainstream ». Un Hardstyle mélodieux qui est toutefois plus moribond que les deux années précédentes, alors que le Raw suit effectivement une toute autre trajectoire, porté par des labels tels qu’A² Records, Unite Records ou DWX Anarchy.
Le Hardstyle euphorique n’est pas en reste avec de « nouveaux » producteurs tels qu’Envine, Neilio ou encore Audiotricz.
On peut enfin noter l’émergence de styles alternatifs tels que la Hard Drop, qui mélange Electro et Hardstyle, avec des artistes comme TNT ou encore Dr Rude. On peut rapprocher ce mouvement du Freestyle, incarné par des DJ tels que LNY TNZ qui mélangent jumpstyle, trap, big room house dans des sets étonnants de variété et de dynamisme. Ces différents courants séduisent beaucoup car ils constituent une bonne porte d’entrée vers la Hard Dance pour qui vient d’un univers plus House ou Progressive.
